Alice Yazzie

Alice Yazzie, 100, of Sheep Springs, NM passed away on April 13th, 2024, in Aztec, New Mexico.

She was born in Hidden Well, Sheep Spring, NM on June 19th, 1923, to George Notah and Flora Watchman. Born to Kinyaa'aanii (Towering House), born to Todichiinii (Bitter Water), Maternal Kinlichiinii (Red House People), and Paternal Todichiinii (Bitterwater)

Alice attended elementary school at Tohachi Boarding School. She left school at third grade to care for the family's flock of sheep. Alice once worked as a dish washer at Sheep Springs Cafe. She married and became a homemaker. She loved to quilt, weave, fish, do word search and spend time with all her grandchildren. She hosted camp meeting revivals every summer. She was a strong woman of faith with powerful prayers.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Keeyah Ben Yazzie, her son, Jones K. Yazzie, her parents, George Notah and Flora Watchman, her brother, Alfredo Watchman, her sisters, Minnie Begay, Emma Yazzie, and Jeanette Johnson, and her grandparents.

She is survived by her sons, Walter Watchman Sr., Freddie Yazhe, and Leonard Yazzie, her daughters, Nancy Johnson, Fany Ben, Melissa Benally, Kathleen Jones, and Laberta Smith, her brother, Alfred Watchman Sr, and her 42 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00am on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at Sheep Spring Pentecostal Church, in Sheep Springs, NM. The service will be officiated by Jones Benally, Evangelist. The burial is scheduled for 1:00pm on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at the family plot, Sheep Spring, NM. The reception will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at the Sheep Springs Chapter House. Serving as pallbearers will be Lawrence Watchman. Aaron Joe, Fredlario Yazhe, Jones Yazzie Jr., Marcus Benally, and Carmelita Thompson. Donations are encouraged to be made to Adrienne Joe (granddaughter).
