Cheryl Simkins

December 25, 1944 — May 24, 2025

Cheryl Diane Neff Simkins, born on December 25, 1944, in Port Angeles, Washington, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the eldest of six children born to E. Lesley and Bertha E. Neff. Cheryl spent her early childhood in Dallas, Texas. In 1959, her family relocated from Dallas to Farmington, New Mexico, drawn by the promise of opportunities in the booming oil and gas industry. She graduated from Farmington High School in 1963.

Cheryl began her professional career with Shell Oil directly out of highschool and later joined Benson- Montin-Greer, where she excelled as a draftsman. She stood out as a woman succeeding in a maledominated field during a time when such roles were rarely occupied by women. Her determination, skill, and strong work ethic earned her the respect of her colleagues. After retiring from the energy industry, Cheryl founded Simkins Enterprises LLC, where she applied her vision and leadership to real estate development and management. A committed professional, Cheryl was an active member of the Desk & Derrick Club since 1963, supporting education and advancement in the petroleum, energy, and allied industries. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, a legacy passed down to her children and grandchildren. Cheryl was an active learner, continuously taking classes of interest at San Juan College. She passed down her love of reading and learning to her children. She spent her spare time volunteering as a board member of the Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, the San Juan Regional Medical Foundation, and the San Juan County Sheriff's Department. Her deep Christian faith was central to her life. She was a devoted member of Emanuel Baptist Church since 1956, where she gave generously of her time and talents to church ministries and community service.

Cheryl is survived by her beloved husband, Bobby Joe Simkins; her children, Matthew Smith and Angie (Smith) Taylor, their brother Christopher Smith; and her stepchildren, JD Simkins and Vicki Simkins. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Fisher Easley Smith, Madison Easley, Cheyanne Simkins, CD Simkins, Cody Simkins, and Mataya Taylor. She also leaves behind her brother Tom Helms.

Cheryl was a private person who did not like to bring attention to herself, but those who knew her recognized her kindness, stubbornness, honesty, and fairness. She was a woman who lived by her own values and treated others with respect and integrity. Her warmth, wisdom, and steadfast faith touched the lives of many, and her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A celebration of Cheryl's life will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the San Juan College Foundation Scholarships or Farmington Museum Foundation.

A special thanks to the caregivers and the kind care received from San Juan Regional Medical Center.

When tomorrow starts without me

Please try to understand,

That an angel came and called my name

And took me by the hand,

And said my place was ready,

In heaven far above,

And that I'd have to leave behind

All those I dearly love.

When tomorrow starts without me,

Don't think we're far apart,

For every time you think of me,

I'm right here in your heart.
