David Lee Phelps

November 5, 1979 — August 1, 2025

Farmington

David Lee Phelps, 45, of Window Rock, Arizona, passed away on August 1, 2025, in Farmington, New Mexico. He was born on November 5, 1979, in Fort Defiance, Arizona. David was born into the Todachinii (Bitter Water) clan, born for the Bilagáana (white people) clan. His maternal grandfather was of the Haashk’aa Hadzohí (Yucca Fruit Strung Out in a Line) clan, and his paternal grandfather was of the Bilagáana (diverse European background) clan.

He is survived by his father, Hardy D. Phelps. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Betty Jean Phelps; his brothers, Michael Lee Phelps and Bobby Lane Benally; and his grandparents, Dolores and Hardy L. Phelps.

David was a proud graduate of Window Rock High School, Class of 1999, home of the Fighting Scouts. He had fond memories of growing up in Tse Bonito, New Mexico, where he spent his childhood enjoying time outside with family and friends, or indoors playing classic NES games like Contra, Zelda, and Double Dragon. He became especially unbeatable in Mortal Kombat II and III. Among his most cherished possessions were his white 1996 Chevy Beretta and his loyal dog, Baby. After high school, David traveled to cities including Phoenix, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, Oakland, and Hayward, working as an equipment and computer board assembler and forklift operator. He was known for his natural skill in mathematical accounting and impressed many with his quick proficiency. David had a deep love for heavy metal music.

He enjoyed bands like Pantera, Slipknot, Disturbed, Nirvana, Godsmack, Metallica, Korn, Static-X, Mudvayne, Drowning Pool, Local H and SpineShank. His favorite band was Apocalyptica, with songs like “I Don’t Care” and “Not Strong Enough.” He also jokingly quoted Prodigy’s “Smack My B**ch Up” as an anthem of humor and attitude. A devoted comic book fan, David loved Wolverine most of all—often mimicking his Weapon X move to cheer up friends. He also admired Captain America and Batman. David enjoyed fishing and patiently taught others how to fish. He played basketball with energy and humor, becoming known for a fadeaway shot that irritated competitors in good fun. David loved the Oakland Raiders, L.A. Dodgers, and Chicago Bulls. He maintained a valuable baseball card collection focused on Ricky Henderson and Jose Canseco. He was also a big fan of anime and action films like Dragon Ball Z, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat.

David had a heart of gold, a sharp wit, and a contagious laugh that could brighten any room. His positivity, problem-solving nature, and compassion were unmatched. His motto in tough times was “Kill ’em All,” pressing forward no matter the challenge. He will be remembered for his energy, humor, and unwavering love for those closest to him. His favorite quote came from Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain: “I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.” David wished to be cremated and laid to rest beside his mother and brother at St. Michaels Cemetery.
