David Oren Polston, 85, of Farmington, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018. He was born Sept. 21, 1932, in Clovis, N.M., the fourth child of Mattie Dera (Monroe) and Francis Oren Polston.
David was born in a Baptist Hospital in Clovis, N.M. and he was proud to say that he was born again and accepted Christ as his personal Savior in 1941. David had a beautiful voice and loved singing, loved the Lord, and loved his wife and family beyond measure. He never met a stranger, and was as positive a person as you could ever meet.
David graduated Melrose High School from Melrose, N.M. He received his BA from Eastern New Mexico University in 1955. During his time at ENMU he served as the Baptist Student Union President, the Education Director of the First Baptist Church Portales, and spent a summer as a Baptist missionary in Hawaii. He earned a Bachelors and Masters of Church Music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in 1959. He later received his Master's in Education from ENMU, and taught public school for 28 years in New Mexico. David taught in Santa Fe for one year, in Thoreau for three years and the fifth grade at Animas Elementary School in Farmington for 24 years.
David led worship singing at Baptist revivals directed by his dad, FO Polston, when he was young. He was a member of the ENMU Choir. He served as the Minister of Music at churches in Portales, N.M., Corpus Christi, Texas and Odessa, Texas. He served as Interim Worship Minister at both First Baptist Church Farmington, and First Baptist Church Bloomfield. He sang for many years in a local barbershop quartet, and was a member of the New Mexico Singing Churchmen.
David loved to be active and play games. He used every activity as an opportunity to meet new people and share his love for the Lord. He played basketball at Melrose high school, and won a state championship. Few could beat him at racquetball; although many good friends tried. He stayed active with swimming, games, traveling the world, and riding motor cycles from Canada to Mexico with his wife Val. He loved a good game of Wahoo, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren will dearly miss those times.
David was preceded in death by his mom, dad; brother, Charles; sisters, Evelyn Polston and Ruth Rich; and his daughter, Debbie Jones. He is survived by his wife, Val; his two sons, David (Julie), and Derald (René); son-in-law, Danny Jones; grandchildren, Marc (Kari) Jones, Stephanie (Ted) Waschsmuth, Shawn (Kristen) Jones, Brittany Polston (Micah) Williams, Keely, Luke and Ella Polston; and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Chloe, Josiah, Rowan, Madison and Olivia.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for David will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at First Baptist Church of Bloomfield, 200 W. Sycamore Ave.
Dad read the bible through every year. His faith was real, and his relationship with the Lord deep. We will miss him terribly, but know for certain we will meet again.
