Earth lost one of its best gardeners when Ernest Monroe Minert (Grandpa Ernie) of Farmington, NM passed away on April 30, 2026, aged 92.
Ernie was an avid gardener. He said that God could be found in a garden. He grew beautiful flowers — peonies, irises, gladiolus, and dahlias which he generously shared with church, banks, friends and family. The taste of his tomatoes, peaches and apricots will always be remembered. He had a rare gift for making others smile and laugh, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed his path.
He was born in Granville, ND to Adolph and Florence (Swallers) Minert, who predeceased him.
Ernie grew up in North Dakota until his teens when the family moved to Wisconsin where they farmed and raised dairy cattle. After graduating a friend suggested he come to New Mexico to get a job in the oilfields. In his “spare” time he raised a garden with the help of his family. He also owned and operated Ernie’s Trailer Court in Farmington. Ernie retired from many years in the oilfield at the El Paso Warehouse, and then in the oilfields –El Paso, Meridian Oil, and Burlington.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jo Ann; his two daughters Richelle Quealy and Marie Jones (Pat Stawinski); his two sons Adolph Minert (Katherine) and Robert Minert. He is survived by 4 grandchildren Kimber Quealy, Jarrhet Quealy, Hannah Horton (Mike), and Sarrah Simmons (Tristan). Also blessed with 2 great grandchildren Claire Horton and Tanner Simmons. He is survived by 2 sisters; Janet Hatle (Gary) and Judy DeShong (Don).
He was a gentle soul who showed us that the greatest legacy isn’t measured in years, but in the warmth of every hug, the wisdom of every story and the love that remains long after goodbye. May his memory be a blessing and may we carry forth his legacy of love and compassion. In loving memory of a life so beautifully lived and a heart so deeply loved.
No memorial services are planned per his wishes. There will be a Celebration of Life to be held at Florence Park, 1104 Rio Brazos, Aztec, NM on Saturday June 13, 2026 from 1-3pm. His ashes will be scattered at a later time.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Crane's Roost Care Home and Basin Home Health for their care, kindness, and support during this difficult time.
