Gary was born in Buffalo, New York on June 12, 1961, to parents Irving and Rita Hess.

Gary is preceded in death by his sister Maureen.

Gary is survived by his brothers Thomas Hess, James (Nancy) Hess, and John Hess, and Joseph (Julie) Hess, and sister Elaine Hess Horey.
