Irene W. Fritz-Zygmunt

Irene W. Fits-Zygmunt, 94, of Farmington, NM, passed away on July 7, 2025, in Farmington, NM. Irene was born on August 11, 1930, in Chicago, IL, to John and Wilma Thompson.Irene was born the only child of her parents, who both immigrated to the United States from Sweden and Norway. Irene spent her primary years in Chicago schools, then moved to Nekoosa, WI, where she graduated from Alexander High School in 1948. She had numerous friends in her class of 53 students and enjoyed choir, sports, and student council. She married Richard Fritz in 1953. They moved to Globe, AZ, starting a family of four children. They settled in Farmington, NM, in 1962. Irene was a homemaker, worked in carpet sales and office management, and then for Dr. Stephen Cassida, DDS. She later married Stanley Zygmunt in 1985. They enjoyed many years of retirement, including traveling and family trips. Irene became a widow in 2007. During her life, she enjoyed her Bible study at Trinity, playing bridge and card games, family, dancing, and music. In 2016, Irene suffered a stroke and ultimately succumbed to an eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s dementia. She remained at Beehive Home Memory Care until her passing.

Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Zygmunt; her parents, John and Wilma Thompson; her daughter-in-law, Missie Fritz; her son-in-law, David Hinson; and her beloved aunt, Mimi Johnson.

Irene is survived by her son, John Fritz; stepson, Stan “Skip” Zygmunt Jr.; her daughters, Susan Hinson, Patrica (Walt) Lucas, Lori (John) Thurstonson; stepdaughters, Adriene Rosen and Christine Swatek; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 26, at 11:00 am at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1221 E 20th St, Farmington, NM 87401, officiated by Reverend Linda Stetter.
