James “Richard” Lee Mahan, a devoted public servant, veteran, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on January 24, 2026, in Farmington, New Mexico. He was born on October 2, 1953, in Modesto, California. Richard was a 1972 graduate of Bloomfield High School and remained a dedicated member of his community throughout his life.

A veteran of the United States Navy, Richard honorably served as a Seabee stationed in Port Hueneme, California. His commitment to service continued with a distinguished career in law enforcement. He served with the Aztec Police Department, retiring at the rank of Sergeant, before dedicating over twelve years to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, where he retired as a Detective. Following a brief retirement, Richard returned to public service as a Gaming Investigator for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, retiring once more with a reputation for integrity, professionalism, and diligence.

Beyond his professional achievements, Richard was a man of vibrant interests and passions. He was an avid music enthusiast and Harley rider and was well known at the Aztec Speedway by his racing moniker, “Mad Man Mahan.” He had a deep appreciation for life and the world around him, finding great joy in traveling, attending Denver Broncos games, and embarking on cruises.

At home, Richard was the only son among four sisters and found his greatest happiness cooking for those he loved. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, which brought him his deepest sense of fulfillment.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Shirley Jane Allen and Ralph Edward Mahan.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Lucy; his children, Nikki Mahan, Jami Benisek, and Jacob Ruybalid; his sisters, Kathy (Leonard) Foyt, Rachal (Johnny) Staff, Becky (Delmar) Newman, and Rene Steward; his cherished grandchildren, Casey, Christopher, Caitlyn, Simon, Lilly, and Aaron; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Sonny, Sylas, Easton, Ezekial, and Christan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who lovingly called him Uncle Rich.
