James John Wilhelm

James Wilhelm, Lovingly referred to by all who knew him as " Papa Jim" 77 of Farmington NM was called home by The Heavenly Father on August 18th 2026. James was born on July 3rd, 1949 in Edgely North Dakota to his parents Anton Wilhelm and Kathryn Wilhelm. James found his way to New Mexico in the 1970's as many did, in search of work at the newly constructed power plants in the area. James held many different Jobs in, and around San Juan County, and the Farmington area, notably as a Roughneck in the oilfield for Cactus Drilling and hauling Frac sand for Dowell-Schlumberger. James also had experience as a machine operator during the mid 70's during the construction of the bridge over the Animas River at Browning Parkway. It was during this time that James became a father to 4 children, Sons Nicholas Wilhelm and Tyson Wilhelm, and Daughters Hannah Bannowsky ( Wilhelm) and Kaitlyn Wilhelm. James was also a Step Father and raised his daughter Amanda Archuleta as his own. As most things go in San Juan County, the oil and gas business had its ups and downs, and during a down-turn, in the 1980's, James became the person he is most known for today, a caretaker. James began running a small daycare out of his home out of necessity, which afforded him the opportunity to provide for and raise his young children, thus becoming the man we all know today as " Papa Jim". Through his daycare Papa nurtured countless children and fostered many lasting relationships with families who entrusted him with their young children. Papa loved cooking and baking and spent countless hours in his home garden, growing fresh food for his family and friends. No one left James's Home without a full stomach, or at the very least, a warm cup of coffee to jump start their busy day. James was an adamant blood donor and received much accolade from the local United Blood Services for his countless donations which surely provided a gift of life to many recipients. James will be remembered by all for the selfless compassion he gave to everyone he met, along with his silly songs and goofy antics. James is preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Kathryn Wilhelm, as well as his brother, Neal Wilhelm. James is survived by his four children, Nicholas Wilhelm, Tyson Wilhelm, Hannah Bannowsky,and Kaitlyn Wilhelm, as well as step-daughter Amanda Archuleta, Brothers Francis Wilhelm, Earl Wilhelm, Dennis Wilhelm. Sisters, Jane Day, and Doris Skrove, and his numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held @ Cottonwood Crossing on Saturday October 3, 2026 @ 4 pm
