John Arthur Ahlm II, was born on August 1, 1946, in Phoenix, Arizona, to John and Mini Ahlm, and moved with his family to Farmington in 1952. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1964 before attending the New Mexico Military Institute. He went on to earn a degree in education from New Mexico State University.
Johnny began his career teaching at Largo Canyon School and Gobernador School, where he served as head teacher. He later worked as a roughneck for various drilling companies before joining Arapahoe Drilling as a manager. He gained the love and respect of many folks during the boom of the San Juan Basin. He worked for Arapahoe Drilling for the next 45+ years.
Johnny married Kathy Barker, and together they had two sons, Mike and John. In 1987, he married Nancy Kline, and over the next 38 years they built a life filled with love, memories, and a blended family.
A longtime member of the Elks, Johnny was also an avid hunter and fisherman. His lifelong passion was gunsmithing and gun collecting. In every aspect of his life, he was a teacher of skill, sharing his knowledge of literature, history, carpentry, and even manners, if ya needed.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 38 years, Nancy; sons Mike (Wendy) Ahlm of Tijeras, NM, and John C. Ahlm of Farmington; stepson Jeff Kline of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Lori Ahlm of Minnesota; stepdaughter Becky (Jack) Miller; grandchildren August, Josh, Justin, Ella, Jeffrey, Conley, Gerri, Casey, and Crystal; and great-grandchildren Ryleigh, Orion, Garran, and Raiden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mini Ahlm, and his sister, Suella.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at RiverStone Church, 808 N. Monterey Ave., Farmington, NM. A reception will follow.
