John R. Dorner, 88, of Bayfield, Colorado, passed away on May 1, 2025, in Farmington, New Mexico. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor, John was known for his deep love for his family and friends and his unwavering willingness to go above and beyond for those he cared about. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John was born on May 24, 1936, in Ithaca, New York, to Jack and Margaret Dorner. He pursued higher education at Marquette University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering. He later became a licensed Professional Engineer through the Wisconsin Registration Board of Architects and Professional Engineers.
Throughout his accomplished career, John held positions at a variety of companies including Oster in Milwaukee, WI; Sunbeam Electric in Elkin, NC; Northland Electric Motors in Watertown, NY; Alcor in San Antonio, TX; and Dorner Company in Milwaukee, WI. He also contributed his expertise to OPS Systems in Rio Rancho, NM, and later worked at Home Depot and Hertz Rental Cars in Durango, CO. John was especially proud of his time as a ski instructor at Purgatory Resort, where he shared his passion for skiing and the outdoors until 2021.
John loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, skiing, hiking, and teaching others to appreciate nature as much as he did.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Dorner. He is survived by his loving wife, Giau Kim Dorner; his children: Michael Dorner and wife Lizzy of Colorado Springs, CO; Scott Dorner and wife Pam of Rio Rancho, NM; Denise Dorner of Farmington, NM; Debbie and husband Jim Moody; and Karen and husband Greg Pilcher. He is also survived by his siblings Dave Dorner and wife Judy of Glendale, WI, and Mary Howard of Twin Falls, ID; as well as his grandchildren: Tyler, Zachary, Eliza, Trey, Colin, Michael, and Shelby, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
