Lynn Hugh Sterling, 84, of Aztec, passed away at his home on October 6, 2024. He was born November 3, 1939 in Kirtland to Hugh and Iva Sterling.
Lynn attended Farmington schools and graduated in 1958. Getting to school daily meant saddling horses with his brother and each would ride double with a sister. They had to cross the San Juan River no matter the conditions even if the river was in flood stage or ice was present. He began working construction at a very early age with his brother Bruce at Sterling Brothers Construction building dams, bridges and roads. He also worked for Foutz & Bursum Construction in the oilfield during his career.
Lynn enjoyed the farming and ranching lifestyle, raising Hereford cattle. His favorite place to be was riding his horse with his wife by his side tending to his cattle in the high country of Colorado and New Mexico during the summers. He loved seeing the elk, deer and occasional bear and other wildlife. He also enjoyed farming and growing the feed for his cows and horses. He had several good horses throughout the years that he thought very highly of. One horse in particular, whose name was ‘Last Chance’ was a horse that only Lynn could ride. Lynn had motivation, ambition and drive that propelled him his whole life keeping him busy daily from before sunup to after sunset. Giving up or putting something off until later was not a concept he understood. He now is finally able to rest.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents Hugh Lemuel Sterling and Iva Alzada Palmer and his brother Bruce Sterling. Lynn is survived by his wife, Barbara Blancett Sterling, sons Steven Lynn Sterling (Marietta) of Pottsboro, TX and Daniel Lee Sterling (Heidi Leigh) of Minot ND and 3 granddaughters; sisters, Virginia Piercey (Bob) and Ester Ludwick; sisters-in-law Karen McFarland (Dewayne), Cathy Sterling; brother-in-law Dewayne Blancett (Elaine).
Lynn had requested that there not be a funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Sardar Imam and staff at San Juan Oncology Associates and William Young PA-C of Pinon Family Practice for their dedication and compassionate care.
