Marjie Smith

Marjie Lou Smith went to be with her Lord and savior on May 14, 2023, she was lovingly surrounded by her daughter and son in law.

Marjie was born on October 18, 1935, to Chester and Jane Like. She had three sisters and grew up on a cattle ranch along the dry Cimmaron River, 65 miles from Clayton, NM. She attended a one room schoolhouse in Goodson, NM until she was in 7th grade. She then moved away at the age of 14 to continue her education in Clayton, NM. where she worked for room and board with another family and cared for their young children. She returned to Albuquerque, NM. with a friend and worked for Equitable Life and a drug store.

She met the love of her life Marvin Smith at a church Christmas party in 1955, they were married June 2, 1956. Marvin worked for PNM in Albuquerque and transferred to Farmington in 1972. They enjoyed years of camping in the homemade camper that Marvin crafted out of an old milk truck. They raised three children in their home on 16th street. Marvin retired after 31 years with PNM in 1982 at the age of 49.

Marjie and her family were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Farmington where she was active in the First United Methodist Women church circle, served with the over 80's luncheon, Emmaus group, she also attended several women's retreates at Sonlight Camp. She volunteered at San Juan Regional Medical Center's gift shop and enjoyed being involved with the Crafty Ladies. She was a gifted seamstress and sewed many outfits for her children, grandchildren, and family as well as crocheting matts from grocery bags. She had a green thumb and loved the outdoors. She could always be found tending her flowerbeds or indoor plants. She was willing to share plant information and cuttings and contributed many plants to the annual church bazaar. She enjoyed camping and traveling and had so many cherished friends in the Farmington/Albuquerque area through the years. In her later years she enjoyed puzzles and her cat, Sugar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, her husband Marvin Smith and two sons Mark and Kenneth Smith.

Marjie is survived by her daughter Carla (Mark) Miszkiel of Tijeras, NM, five grandchildren Amy (Daniel) Duerre of Albuquerque, Brad (Joanna) Miszkiel of Los Lunas, Matt Miszkiel of Albuquerque, Elizabeth (Christian) Weiscamp of Blanca, Co. and Timothy Smith (Kelsey) of Eagle Nest, NM. Nine great Mila, Ivy, Denver, Parker, Aspen, Summer, George, Henry and Annie and numerous nieces and nephews around the country.

A celebration Memorial will be held at Riverstone Church in Farmington on Friday May 19, 2023, at 2:00pm. She will be laid to rest at Memory Gardens Cemetery alongside her loving husband and sons.
