Mary Louise Maitlen

October 4, 1930 — November 30, 2023

Aztec

Mary Louise (Allee) Maitlen—known affectionately as mom, grandma, and Mary Lou—departed this earth on November 30, 2023, at the age of ninety-three. Mary was born in Pueblo, Colorado, in 1930. In 1948, she married the man whom she would spend the next fifty- four years of her life, Carl Eugene Maitlen. In 1953, Carl and Mary moved to New Mexico, the place they would build a life together and raise their five children: Tommy, Larry, Brenda, Terrie, and Lester. Together they purchased a one-hundred acre farm along the bank of the Animas River just north of Aztec. This would become their legacy property—a place where their children were raised, grandkids roamed, and countless memories were made with friends and family. Mary loved to host and spend time with family. Mary excelled in gardening and cultivating flowers; she enjoyed a cup of coffee in the midst of a meaningful conversation; she loved chocolates; and she loved ice cream, perhaps, the most. She had the kind of smile that would light up a room and every heart in it. Mary’s greatest legacy, unquestionably, is her children. The mark of a great mother is having adult children who adore her and love spending time with her. Without question, each of Mary’s five children loved her deeply until the very end. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Grace Allee, her brother Daniel Allee, and her husband, Carl Eugene Maitlen. Mary is survived by her sister, Joyce Lupton; brother, Dallas (Claudia) Allee; children Tommy Maitlen, Larry (Charllotte) Maitlen, Brenda (Ken) Norris, Terrie Waldron, and Lester Maitlen; along with eight grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and sixteen great-great grandchildren. A memorial service to honor Mary will take place on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 10AM, at Calvary Chapel Farmington, 6925 E. Main Street, Farmington, NM 87401, along with a viewing of Mary at the same location from 9AM to 9:45AM. Mary will be laid to rest immediately following the service at Memory Gardens in Farmington.
