Mary Alice Woods Vaught of Farmington, NM passed away on Sunday, August 10th, 2025. Born at home, on Sunday, November 28th, 1937, in Upper Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
She graduated from Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She later obtained her Master’s degree in Education from the University of West Virginia. She taught school in Orlando, FL, Punxsutawney, PA, and in Orange, CA. She also worked for the National Park Service, the GSA motor pool, and for Micron. For 7 years, she lovingly took care of her sister-in-law, 5 of those years while still working full time. Mary also gave up her full-time job, moved back to the family farm with her sister-in-law and husband to take care of her widowed father so he could continue to live at home.
Mary Alice Woods Vaught was a strong, loving wife, mother and grandmother. Affectionately known as “Grand Mary”. She enjoyed gardening, canning and her puzzle books. She hand-stitched many beautiful quilts that she gifted to beloved family and friends to deal with the loss of her only son of 19 years. She will be deeply missed.
She was predeceased by her parents, William Frederick Woods and Mary Catherine Tannehill Woods, her beloved husband Donald Lee Vaught, her sister Carylon Leser, her brother William L Woods, her son Ronald L Griffith, her stepson Kenneth D Vaught, and her Grandson Jason S Hearn.
She is survived by her daughter Susan M Hearn, husband Douglas, Bloomfield, NM, Stepson Donald K Vaught, wife AeCha, Manteca, CA, brothers Donald Woods, Confluence, PA, Robert Woods, wife Marilyn, Brockway, PA, sisters Freda Cooper, Scottsdale, AZ, Barbara Britt, husband Thomas, Uniontown, PA, brother-in-law Ken Leser, Marblehead, OH, sister-in-law Dixie Woods, Centerville, PA, 7 grandchildren, Johnathan Hearn, wife Bryanna, Tiffany Vaught, Christopher Vaught, Katie Vaught, Andrew Higgins, wife Amanda, Heather Vaught, husband Jason Jetton, Beverlee Vaught, wife Danielle, and 7 great grandchildren, Brock, Cassandra, and Tatum Hearn, Andi Kay Boroff, Gauge Higgins, Gavin Jetton, Malachi Vaught.
It is greatly appreciated, the love and support that was given to Mary and her immediate family over the years from the Kilgore and Vaught families.
Her interment and celebration of life will be at Memory Gardens, 6917 E Main St. Farmington, NM, Monday, August 18th at 1pm.
