Maryann Dorothy Zepka Thompson, 96, passed away peacefully at her home at Namaste House with her family by her side on March 22, 2023.
Maryann was born November 19, 1926 to Ludwig and Theresa Zepka in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from Shore High School in Cleveland in 1944 and Bowling Green State University in Ohio in 1948. She went on to teach high school briefly in Houghton Lake, Michigan where she met the love of her life, Jack C. Thompson. The couple married on June 9, 1949 and were happily married until Jack's death in 1986.
Maryann and Jack lived in many locations throughout the oil patch in Kansas, Venezuela South America, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas, a journey immortalized in special lyrics of the "Thompson's Go Rolling Along" to the tune of the "Caissons Go Rolling Along". Maryann provided stability through many moves for the family, by organizing schools and activities. She was a scout leader, room mother, Red Lady, golfer, sometimes a skier, a fisherwoman (if fishing while reading counts as fishing), a member of Republican Women and an avid sports fan. She rooted for her kids and grandkids in all their sporting events and loved to watch football.
When the family moved to Farmington, Maryann opened the Needlepoint Shop in the Mesa Shopping Center, teaching many the joys of needlepoint. She was a prolific knitter and loved making baby blankets. Maryann studied Library Science at Bowling Green and the library was one of her favorite places. In Farmington she served on the Library Board and was the librarian at Sacred Heart School for several years.
After Jack's death Maryann married H.B. Mullin but was widowed again, all too soon.
She is survived by her children Sue Dintelman (Bob), Paul Thompson (Leslie), Ann Thompson, and John Thompson (Carrie), eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass for Maryann will be Tuesday, April, 4 2023 at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 414 N. Allen Avenue in Farmington, NM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Maryann Thompson to Namaste House Assisted Living (800 W 30th St, Farmington, NM 87401) and/or the Farmington Library Foundation (2101 Farmington Ave, Farmington, NM 87401).
