Nyla Burkett, 93, of Aztec passed away on Tuesday January 27th surrounded by family that loved her.

Nyla was born in Breen, CO. She grew up in Silverton and graduated from Silverton High in 1950. She married the love of her life, Bud Burkett, in 1951 and together they raised seven children. They moved to California in 1958 and returned to the Durango/Farmington area in 1985.

Nyla was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother and friend. After she raised her children her love of babies and kids never diminished – she was happiest when she had a baby in her lap and kids at her feet. She had a special connection with each of her beloved grandchildren and is known for bestowing great affection on them. Her love of kids extended across borders – she has an “adopted” family in Mexico that will miss her greatly.

Nyla loved people and loved engaging in spirited conversation, always speaking her mind. Nyla was loving, generous and was quick to offer acts of kindness that would leave a lasting impression. Throughout her life she enjoyed traveling, crocheting, playing cards, watching sports, and helping others. She loved learning and was a huge fan of the TV program, Jeopardy.

Nyla was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Bud. She is survived by her seven children: Lee, Toni, Teri, Dawna, Smokey, Tim and Kyle; 13 grandchildren; many great grandchildren, and a great great-grandson.

Nyla touched the lives of everyone that knew her and she will be remembered for her warm and generous spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength and compassion and will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

At Nyla’s request a service will not be held.
