Robert Akley

It is with profound sadness and much love that we mourn the sudden passing of our sweet RJ, Robert James Akley.

RJ was our miracle, born on July 16, 2005, in Farmington, NM. It is the Bloomfield, NM community, along with his family, huge extended family, school family, church family, Jr. Civitan family, Scout family, and many friends who profoundly shaped him into the beautiful soul and extraordinary human that he was. RJ was very loving and funny, a deep thinker, brilliant in so many ways, gifted in math and literature. He loved Sci-Fi, Monty Python, history, animals, camping, and cooking, but his primary loves and passions were music, the theater, his Talia, and his very dear friends.

RJ is survived by his parents, Cecilia ‘Liza” Gomez and James Akley, both of Bloomfield, NM, his big brother, Andrew Gomez (Trisha) of Denver, CO, maternal grandmother, Alvina Aguirre of Aztec, NM, paternal grandmother, Judith Akley of Grants, NM; his uncles, David Aguirre (Sandy) of Kenai, AK, Padrinos Tony Aguirre (Heidi) of Bloomfield, NM, and Dax Gomez (Ashley) of Pleasant View, TN; his aunts, Elicia Gomez Fortner Harmon (Jonathan) of Murfreesboro, TN, Jacqueline Akley Kennedy (Joe) of Phoenix, AZ,  and Jerilyn Akley Glover (John) of Albuquerque, NM; his cousins, Gabe Aguirre, Aubrey Aguirre, Adam (Elena) Aguirre, Mia Aguirre, Elena M. Aguirre, Dominique Aguirre, Bianca Aguirre, Judson Fortner, McCoy Fortner, Janice Akley Biondi (Anthony), Jonathan Akley, Joseph Kennedy (Jessica), Jazmynn Kennedy Antole (CJ), Jackson Hamstra, and Cameron Glover; Dax Mitchell, Gianna Biondi, Gavin Biondi, McKenzie Kennedy, Callen Kennedy, Aiden Akley, Brynlee Akley, Emira Antole, and August Antole, along with numerous extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, MSG Rubel Cipriano Gomez, his paternal grandfather, James Norman Akley, and his uncle Rubel Gomez II.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 307 N. Church Street, in Bloomfield, NM.  A rosary will be recited at 10:00 am and a Memorial Mass will follow at 10:30 am.  The Reverend Francis Akano and Deacon Patrick Valdez will officiate.  Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery later this summer.

The family will receive relatives and friends immediately following Mass at St. Mary’s parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bloomfield High School Band and Theater programs.
