Sabino Chavez

January 13, 1937 — December 28, 2022

Sabino Nicanor (Nick) Chavez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family in Blanco, NM on Wednesday December 28, 2022.

 

Nick was born to Sabino and Josephina Chavez in Blanco, NM on January 13, 1937.  He graduated from Aztec High School in 1956 before enlisting in the United States Air Force.  While stationed in Yakota Air Base in Fussa, Japan he met his wife Kumi Igarashi where they were married on August 19, 1960.   Nick and Kumi returned to the states that year where they eventually raised their three children in the Blanco/Bloomfield area. Nick started his career with Southern Union Refinery and continued to advance in the company prior to his retirement as a plant manager.   Nick loved to work with his hands and did everything from building two houses to overhauling and restoring cars.  He crafted many wood working projects for his family, the church and friends.  Although he never claimed to be a good farmer, he continued to farm the Chavez family homestead well into his 80’s.

 

Nick is preceded in death by his wife Kumi, parents Sabino and Josephina, and sister Elsie Saiz.  He is survived by his children Priscilla (Scott) Mohrhauser, Kenneth (Susan) Chavez, Luke (Cathy Rodriguez) Chavez; Grand children Derek (Amanda) Mohrhauser, Mitchell (Aimee) Mohrhauser, Timothy (Emily) Chavez, Richard (Augusta) Chavez, Eduardo Chavez, Isabella Chavez, Alyssa (Taylor Zachary) Chavez and Jeremy (Emily Clancy) Chavez.  He is also survived by eleven great grandchildren; Norah, Evelyn, Ivy, Madison, Emery, Olivia, Lullabelle Rae, Jose, Ismael, Liliana and Layla. 

 

Reciting of the Rosary will take place on January 20, 2023 at 7:00 pm at St. Rose Catholic Church in Blanco, NM.  A memorial Mass for Nick will be held on January 21, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Rose Catholic Church with the interment at the Blanco cemetery.  A reception will follow the interment at the St. Rose Parish Hall. 

 

Pallbearers:  Derek Mohrhauser, Mitchell Mohrhauser, Timothy Chavez, Richard Chavez, Eduardo Chavez and Jeremy Chavez.  Honorary Pallbearers:  Alyssa Chavez, Isabella Chavez, Amanda Mohrhauser, Aimee Mohrhauser, Augusta Chavez and Emily Chavez.

 

The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Sabol and his staff as well as the Guardian Angels who provided such compassionate care for Nick.

 

Nick is in the care of Farmington Funeral Home.
