Sophia Flores Byland

Sophia, a woman of unmatched resilience, profound strength, and boundless love, passed away peacefully on September 21st, 2026, at the age of 86. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy as an exceptional mother, grandmother, sister, and successful entrepreneur.

 Born in Mexico, Sophia's journey was defined by an independent spirit from the very beginning. At the young age of 18, she made the brave decision to come to California in pursuit of a better life. Her early years were a testament to her determination, working first in San Diego, before moving to Northern California, and eventually returning to San Diego. No matter the challenges of navigating a new country, Sophia's resolve never wavered.

Her fierce independence was matched only by her deep devotion to her family. When her mother passed away, Sophia did not hesitate to step up, adopting and raising her own young siblings. She shielded them with her strength and nurtured them with a love that knew no bounds. She went on to become an equally extraordinary mother and grandmother, serving as the steady anchor and guiding light for her entire family.

Sophia was known to everyone as an excellent cook-a talent that became the foundation of her American Dream. Her culinary gifts and sharp business mind culminated in her becoming a proud restaurant owner. For more than 20 years, she successfully managed her business, concrete proof of her hard work, intelligence, and triumph in the United States.

When she wasn't working hard or taking care of everyone else, Sophia cherished her downtime. She especially loved visiting the casino, a favorite pastime where she made countless joyful memories alongside her daughter, Jeannette. These trips were filled with laughter, fun, and the close, irreplaceable bond they shared. She was surrounded by her loved ones during her final hours, before being united with God and her Savior Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her Son; Dwayne Byland, Parents: Santiago and Lucia Flores, Brothers: Juan Flores, Santiago Flores, Miguel Flores, Manuel Flores, Jose Byland. Sister; Estela Vargas.
Surviving are her Sons; Richard (Stephanie) Byland and Robert Byland. Daughters: Jeanette (Abe) Tafoya, Nancy (Martin) Salazar and Cindy (Nathan) Lovato. Numerous Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Sisters; Francisca Estrada, Ofelia Walker and Maria De Jesus Flores.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Jacob Byland, Isaiah Byland, Richard Byland, Brienton Barton, Cameron Murphy and Christopher Valverde.

Visitation and Viewing will be held Monday September 28, 2026 from 9:30 AM to 10:30, followed by The Holy Rosary at 10:30 AM and Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2100 E. 20th St., Farmington, New Mexico 87401. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomfield, NM. A reception will follow graveside services at St. Mary's Catholic Church Parish Hall, 307 N Church St. Bloomfield, NM 87413
