Farmington, New Mexico

Sybil was born on February 3, 1930 in New Rockford, North Dakota to George S. and Ellen Garland who farmed near Carrington, North Dakota. Sybil attended a one-room school for her first 8 years before transferring to Carrington High School. She was a member of the Honor Society and had leading roles in class plays. Upon graduation, she became office manager of Central Chevrolet in Carrington. On September 9, 1951 she married her high school sweetheart, Curtis Brown, and moved to Durango, Colorado and then to Farmington. They shared 74 good years. She raised two daughters, Christine A. Liebel (Roger) and Kathryn L. Tafoya.

She was a wonderful wife and mother and invaluable partner in the numerous businesses that she and Curtis operated in Farmington, Aztec, and Gallup New Mexico. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for several years and was awarded Girl of the Year.

She loved her cabin the the woods north of Pagosa Springs and enjoyed it for 17 years. She and Curtis then transitioned to a motor home, putting in 200,000 miles over 23 years. They also traveled as far as Prince George, Canada on their motorcycle and flew all over the country in their airplane. They also traveled to Europe, Mexico, Japan, and South America.

She enjoyed travel, reading, tending her numerous flower gardens and large yard, and doing jigsaw puzzles. She created many beautiful afghans, both knitted and crocheted.

She was preceded in death by her parents and only sibling George M. Garland. She is survived by her husband, Curtis, her two daughters, Chris Liebel and son in law, Roger Liebel, Kathryn Tafoya, grandchildren, Karen Bahling, Steve Liebel, Shannon Lewis and Sarah Tafoya. There are also 5 great grand children.

Cremation has taken place and burial at Greenlawn Cemetery will be at a later date.
