Virginia Lorraine Caywood

Virginia Lorraine Caywood, 95, went to be with our Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

Virginia was born July 24, 1931 in Sidney, Nebraska to Cecil and Vera Sowards. She was the youngest of three daughters. In 1950, she married the love of her life, James Caywood. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two sons, Cecil Caywood and Timothy Caywood.

Throughout her life, Virginia worked in many different places and touched the lives of countless people. She was a teacher in a small schoolhouse, worked at a bank, and later served as a secretary at Farmington High School. Virginia often spoke of how much she loved working with the students at the high school. She retired from Farmington Schools.

Virginia was a woman of many talents and took great joy in creating things with her hands. She loved decorating cakes, painting ceramics, sewing, crocheting and embroidering; hobbies she shared with her grandchildren. One of her most cherished traditions was making each of her grandchildren a homemade Christmas ornament every year-gifts that became treasured memories of her love and thoughtfulness.

Virginia was also a wonderful cook, but her homemade bread was especially famous. Her bread won first place at the San Juan County Fair, a testament to the care and skill she put into everything she made.

She loved springtime and looked forward to planting flowers and spending long summer days working in her garden. She took great pride in keeping her flowers beautiful and her garden flourishing. Virginia was also known for her exquisite handwriting, another small reflection of the care and grace she brought to everything she did.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Vera and Cecil Sowards and her sister, Millie Schilling.

She is survived by her beloved husband, James Caywood; her sons, Cecil Caywood (Merlyn) and Timothy Caywood (Debbie); her sister, Emily Henke; her grandchildren, Hannah Watts, Caleb Caywood, Rochelle Hastings (Bobby), and Lacey Herrera (Keith), several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and extended family members who will miss her dearly.

Virginia leaves behind a legacy of love, family, creativity, hard work, and cherished traditions. She will be remembered for her kindness, her talents, her beautiful gardens, her homemade bread, and most of all, the love she gave so freely to her family. She was the best grandmother anyone could ask for and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

She is now at peace in the loving arms of Jesus and reunited with those who went before her.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
