Laurena “Mom” Begay

Laurena Werito Begay, who loved to be called “Shama” by her grandchildren, departed her loving family on January 12, 2021.

Laurena was born in Carson, New Mexico on March 23,1943 to Billy and Ella Werito.

She attended boarding school in Ignacio, Colorado and later relocated to Los Angeles, California. While residing in Los Angeles as a factory employee, she met the love of her life, John Kee Begay, over 60 years ago.

Laurena was mother to Jacquelynn Atole, Kimberly Yazzie, and Marvin Begay. She raised her children with love and devotion in Los Angeles, CA. and Farmington, N.M. with her husband “Johnny”.

As a Safeway Deli Clerk, Laurena was known for her excellent customer service, dedication and loyalty. Her hobbies included crocheting pillows & blankets and cooking for family & friends. She also enjoyed spending time with her sisters at their weekly breakfast meetings. She was most proud of Directing Women’s Ministry at Carson Living Waters Assembly of God for several years.

Laurena was an amazing woman of God, a very caring, giving, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and sister. She touched and inspired many people. We are grateful that God blessed us with her.
She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her loving Husband Johnny, Daughter Kim (Orlando), Son Marvin (Delia), Grandchildren: Tashia (Delbert) Chavez, Shawnnia (Jazz) Atole, Ivan (Amanda) Atole III, Marques Yazzie, Micah Yazzie, Autumn Begay, and Chloe Begay. Her Great Grandchildren: MeKenzie Chavez, Sean Chavez, MeKayla Chavez. Her faithful companion, “Bella”.

She is preceded in death by her parents Billy and Ella Werito, sister Etta, daughter Jacquelynn Atole, granddaughter Tyeshea Yazzie, and great granddaughter Faith Norton Atole.

Due to the current pandemic Private Services will be held for immediate family only.

Floral Arrangements and/or Donations to the Farmington Funeral Home can be made in Laurena Begay’s name.
